Modern planters are designed to take the effort out of sowing crops while introducing a greater degree of accuracy into the process with help from precision ag technology and cutting-edge design.
Read More (About Planters)Planters have been a part of farming for centuries, allowing producers of corn, soybeans, cotton, vegetables, peanuts, and a huge variety of other crops to better control the width of rows, seed placement and spacing, and seed depth, along with the application of herbicides and pesticides when necessary. The planter is designed not only to take the effort out of sowing the crop, but also to introduce a high degree of accuracy into the planting process. The first tractor-drawn planters allowed farmers to plant 16 to 20 hectares (around 40 to 50 acres) in a day; today’s largest planters can plant 48 rows in one pass, allowing them to plant in excess of 6 ha per hour.
Over the years, research has led to a better understanding of the best seed depths, row spacing, fertilizer placement, and other factors, allowing manufacturers to create innovative new products that increase the number of rows planted in each pass, add GPS technology and guidance, and enable performance monitoring from the cab or other devices to control the number and spacing of seeds. Features such as rugged row units that can better withstand a variety of soil and residue conditions and improved hydraulics that automatically adjust the up and down pressure provide more accurate seed placement.
Other innovations enable farmers to use technology to find the best meter settings from a mobile device or even turn specific rows on or off to avoid skips and overlaps, leading to gains in both efficiency and yield. Newer models also come with a variety of options for blades with ripple, bubble, or flute edges to work in various types of soil, as well as planters designed to work with various levels of in-field residue.
You’ll find a large selection of new and used planting equipment for sale on FarmandPlant.ie, including planters from popular manufacturers such as Gaspardo, Grimme, Horsch, Kverneland, Monosem, Standen, and others.
