Read More (About Mulch Finishers)Mulch finishers are secondary tillage tools that perform multiple tillage applications in one pass, thus saving growers time, fuel, and labour costs. Due to their multifunctional design, they’re also referred to as “one-pass,” “land finishers,” and “soil finishers.” A typical mulch finisher may be equipped with one or more rows of discs located up front, followed by field cultivator shanks or sweeps and a finishing attachment at the rear. This arrangement makes it possible to slice open, till, finish, and level the soil to prepare a seedbed for planting. In addition to warming the soil, using a mulch finisher promotes enhanced seed placement and germination, resulting in increased crop yields.
Models from leading mulch finisher manufacturers like Landoll, Lemken, and Sunflower are available in a variety of designs and with lots of options to suit differing purposes and growing conditions. Lemken says its Koralin 9 is perfect for full-area, ultra-shallow soil cultivation, providing protection against soil erosion while maintaining soil moisture. The tool can cut stubble vertically and horizontally to speed up decomposition and mix in residue at a shallow depth to help retain water and reduce evaporation. The Sunflower 6433 Land Finisher features a split-wing design that makes for low-height, narrow transport. The machine also locates a disc gang reel directly behind a disc gang, which Sunflower says allows the 6433 to pulverise soil and clods, thoroughly incorporate chemicals, vigourously mix soil and residue, and eliminate soil from ridging.
The John Deere 2330 range features hydraulically adjustable rolling baskets and staggered tandem wheels that prevent residue from building up. Available in three- or five-section configurations with working widths that range from 6.6 to 17.1 metres (21.65 to 56 feet), the 2330 can size up to 80% of the residue it cuts before mixing it into the soil to promote seed placement and germination. The Landoll 8500 Series Finisholl, meanwhile, is equipped with hydraulically adjustable disc gangs with ultra-low concavity disc blades and either spring-clamp shanks or two-piece S-tine shanks designed for rock-free soils. Finishing attachment options include a five-row spike, chopper and spike, three-row tine and reel, or three-bar spike and reel.
