Utility vehicles play an important part in the industry and market leaders John Deere recognised that fact when they extended their range in 2012.
Read More (John Deere Gator Review)The firm introduced two new models, the XUV 550 and XUV 550 S4. The new vehicles boast the familiar John Deere green and yellow colours but are lighter, smaller and more agile than other models in the range. The S4 version is a particular departure for John Deere, being the first such vehicle to offer seating for four. The extra passenger accommodation has been achieved by stretching the chassis to add a rear bench behind the standard front two bucket-style seats. This rear seating can be quickly folded away to create more cargo-carrying capacity when required. This extensive storage capacity is complemented by a large lockable glove box and a compartment hidden away beneath the bonnet.
The Gators are powered by an OHV V-twin and air-cooled petrol unit, which offers impressive acceleration up to a more than adequate top speed of 28mph. An excellent specification also includes a user-friendly CVT transmission and hydraulic disc brakes at all four corners. The Gators are clearly built for rough terrain and have a market-leading 10.3 inch ground clearance. For those who intend to do some really rough work, underbody skid protection was also offered. The off-road practicality of the Gators is boosted by fully independent all-wheel suspension, which allows for nine inches of wheel travel at the front and eight inches at the back. This eats up the largest bumps, offering a smoother ride while providing maximum traction on uneven surfaces. This off-road ability is further enhanced by the option of an integrated winch and recovery loops.
Cargo is well looked after, with a 181kg capacity cargo box which can be accessed and lifted off from both sides of the vehicle. There is also an easily operated and removable rear tailgate and ample anchor points both inside and outside of the cargo box to secure your load. Practicality is further enhanced via a heavy-duty rear receiver hitch, which allows the Gator to tow up to 500kg. The Gator can also be customised for specific roles via a wide range of optional implements and attachments. The vehicle can be fitted with windscreen and roof and even a completely enclosed cab if needed. Other optional equipment available includes a rear screen, a rail system to accommodate the cargo box, front work lights and front brush guard.
Gators are extremely versatile and offer quick, easy and light transport around the farm. In the livestock sector, they provide an efficient means of transportation while you are checking up on animals and rounding them up. They are also perfect for transporting feed to remote herds and carrying equipment and workers to repair fencing. The light construction means less rutting and compaction of ground surfaces while carrying out everyday tasks around the farm. They can also save on fuel where larger, thirstier tractors are not really required. The John Deere Gators are simple but well-thought-out utility vehicles that will find a home and many uses on a large variety of farms.
