Chisel Plows
(VAT applies to buyers in South Africa)
Chisel ploughs are primary tillage machines that use firm, depth-adjustable shanks attached to a durable frame pulled by a tractor to tear into the soil, reducing compaction without inverting the soil.
Read More (About Chisel Ploughs)Chisel ploughs are used for primary tillage in the fall and spring. By loosening and aerating the soil, they improve soil drainage, combat erosion, and reduce weed growth. Chisel ploughs use firm, depth-adjustable shanks attached to a durable frame pulled by a tractor to tear into the soil, reducing compaction without inverting the soil. For this reason, farmers often use them in no-till operations. Chisel ploughs are also sometimes used in combination with other tillage tools such as a harrow, tines, a rolling basket, or a finishing reel for levelling soil and breaking up residue.
Farmer Fred Hoeme is credited with developing the chisel plough in Oklahoma, United States, in 1933. Hoeme wanted a tool that could plough farmland and control the impacts of wind erosion; he sold about 2,000 units of his machine before W.T. Graham acquired manufacturing and distribution rights from him in the late 1930s. Graham established a manufacturing plant in Amarillo, Texas, to produce the tool, which became known as the Graham-Hoeme Chisel Plow.
Chisel ploughs are used in the fall after harvest to aerate the soil and leave crop residue behind to prevent wind and water erosion. In the spring, they’re used to break up soil, eliminate emerging weeds, and aerate the ground. Depending on the model, a chisel plough may include one or more rows of rigid shanks configured 23 to 30.5 centimetres (9 to 12 inches) apart and set from 20.3 to 45.7 cm (8 to 18 in.) deep. Depending on the desired levels of residue management, weed prevention, and soil preparation, shanks are available with points, wide sweeps, and shovels.
John Deere’s 2430 chisel plough is available in rigid and rigid fold, three-section folding, and five-section folding frames with working widths from 3.05 to 19.2 metres (10 to 63 feet). Rigid TruPosition and spring-reset TruDepth technologies allow for 20.3 to 30.5 cm (12 in.) depths. TruSet tillage technology, meanwhile, allows operators to adjust shank depth on the fly with assistance from individual wheel sensors and electronic circuitry. The 2430 can be used with a knife edge hydraulic rolling basket with internal basket scraper for tackling wet field conditions or John Deere’s 240 Coil-Tine Chisel Plow Harrow, which the manufacturer says is ideal for handling residue.
